Finally, the testosterone-dominated field of football will have a little feminine energy.
Lydia Nsekera wins a full four-year term on the FIFA Executive Committee after garnering 95 votes. Two other women will join her: Moya Dodd and Sonia Bien-Aime, with 70 and 38 votes, respectively. These two will have a one-year term with the committee.
Nsekera served as president of the Federation de Football du Burundi since 2004, and as member of the International Olympic Committee since 2009.
The Burundi native’s four-year term will commence immediately. In the event that she leaves her post permanently, the Committee will appoint another female in her place until the next Congress.
Nsekera told FIFA.com: “I will inspire women to believe they can lead, I will push them to let their girls play football because it is a school of life, and I will support women in the Member Association.”
Dodd and Bien-Aime are no strangers to the politics of football either. Dodd also made history by being the first woman in the executive committee of the Football Federation Australia, and rose through the ranks to become vice-president of the Asian Football Confederation. Meanwhile, Bien-Aime also serves as General Secretary at the TCIFA (Turks & Caicos Islands Football Association).
FIFA is undergoing a two-year reform process, and part of the process is involving more females in crucial decision-making positions in football.
